Start at Hlavné námestie, where the reconstructed square is dominated by the Church of St John the Baptist, a Classicist building erected in 1774–1790. The Gemer-Malohont Museum occupies former military barracks nearby. Its collections cover archaeology, regional history, ethnology, art and natural science; a preserved Egyptian woman’s mummy is among its best-known objects.
The town was a historic centre of the Gemer-Malohont region, and its streets still gather civic and cultural institutions around the square. For a change of pace, Kurinec-Zelená voda, a recreation area beside a reservoir south of town, offers a waterside setting within the surrounding lowland landscape.
