Paths wind through the wooded grounds of Hisarlaka Fortress, with old walls and views towards the Osogovo Mountains.
Estimated journey times
Climb the wooded hill to Hisarlaka Fortress, built in late antiquity and later adapted through the medieval period. Its surviving walls and towers occupy a ridge above the Osogovo Mountains, with paths through the surrounding park. Back in the centre, the Roman Thermae recall the settlement’s ancient role as a spa town, using the area’s mineral waters.
The medieval Church of St George is among the region’s oldest surviving churches, with frescoes and a compact cross-domed plan. For a different perspective, visit the Vladimir Dimitrov Art Gallery, devoted to the Bulgarian painter known as the Master. Orchards and mountain slopes frame the historic core, linking architecture with the landscape.
