Finds from Heraclea Sintica at the History Museum bring the ancient city near Mount Kozhuh into view.
Estimated journey times
The Historical Museum of Petrich traces the area’s archaeology, ethnography and modern history. Its collections include finds from Heraclea Sintica, an ancient city near the village of Rupite on the southern slope of volcanic Mount Kozhuh. The archaeological site lay roughly ten kilometres from the modern town and reflects centuries of settlement in the Sinti region.
About 16–20 kilometres west, Samuil’s Fortress formed part of the Bulgarian defensive line during the wars with Byzantium around 1000. The remains include dugouts and a lookout tower above the Strumeshnitsa River. Together, museum and nearby archaeological landscapes explain the strategic importance of this southwestern border region.
