St Nicholas Cathedral rises above Elbląg’s Old Town, where new façades echo historic street lines.
Estimated journey times
The centre of Elbląg is being rebuilt in a style called retrowersion: new townhouses echo historic street lines and roof forms without copying lost buildings exactly. The Church Path winds between churches and reconstructed façades, while the Market Gate preserves a fragment of the medieval defences.
The Gothic St Nicholas Cathedral anchors the old town. Archaeological finds beneath the district—from everyday objects to trade goods—show the reach of the former Hanseatic port. The nearby Elbląg Canal begins a remarkable water route through the region.
