Copernicus once worked at the Gothic Castle of the Warmian Chapter, whose tower looks over the old town.
Estimated journey times
The Gothic Castle of the Warmian Chapter was once home to Nicolaus Copernicus, who served as administrator here. The castle now houses the Museum of Warmia and Masuria, with historic rooms and a tower view over the old town. Nearby, St James’s Cathedral marks the medieval centre with its brick Gothic silhouette.
The Olsztyn Planetarium, opened on the 500th anniversary of Copernicus’s birth, connects the city to his astronomical legacy. Outside the centre, Lake Ukiel and the City Forest bring water and woodland close to the urban streets. The combination of scientific heritage and green space gives Olsztyn a distinct Warmian character.
