Climb the hill to Guimarães Castle and the small chapel of São Miguel do Castelo.
Sacred Hill and old town
The Castle of Guimarães and nearby São Miguel do Castelo chapel crown the hill associated with Portugal’s founding. Below stands the 15th-century Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, with its monumental halls and brick chimneys. The UNESCO-listed historic centre unfolds downhill through granite arcades, balconies and narrow lanes.
Oliveira and Couros
At Largo da Oliveira, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira and Padrão do Salado anchor a medieval square. South of the walls, the Couros Zone preserves former tanneries and workers’ houses, documenting the leather craft that once shaped this part of town.
