Walled old town
Enter Vila Adentro through the Arco da Vila, a preserved gateway that incorporates an older Arab arch. Within the walls, Faro Cathedral stands on the site of an earlier mosque; its bell tower looks across the rooftops toward the Ria Formosa estuary. The nearby Municipal Museum occupies the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
Lagoon landscape
Beyond the centre, Ria Formosa Natural Park protects tidal channels, salt marshes and barrier islands along the Algarve coast. The contrast between the enclosed historic quarter and the open lagoon explains Faro’s long connection to both inland trade and the sea.
