Walk Monte Urgull’s paths past old defensive walls to Castillo de la Mota and its view across the bay.
Follow the curve of La Concha from the former casino, now the City Hall, toward the old fishing port. The shell-shaped bay is framed by Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo, with Santa Clara Island in the water between them. Just inland, the Parte Vieja gathers narrow streets beneath Urgull’s fortifications; its layout reflects the rebuilding that followed the 1813 fire.
Climb the paths of Monte Urgull to see old defensive walls, the Castillo de la Mota and views back across the bay. The Urumea River offers a contrasting route through the city, crossed by ornate bridges before reaching the sea. Together, shore, old quarter and hill explain how Donostia grew between the bay, river and defensive headland.
