Vauban’s Citadel crowns a ridge inside the Doubs loop, its ramparts still marking the city’s military past.
Estimated journey times
The Citadel of Besançon, designed by military engineer Vauban in the 17th century, occupies a ridge within the tight loop of the Doubs River. Its fortifications form part of the UNESCO-listed Fortifications of Vauban; museums on the site interpret regional life, natural history and the Resistance.
In the Saint-Jean Cathedral, the 19th-century astronomical clock by Auguste-Lucien Vérité turns the city’s watchmaking heritage into a mechanical display. The Palais Granvelle, a Renaissance residence, houses the Museum of Time, where clocks and scientific instruments connect local craft with wider history.
