Château and naval harbour

The Château de Brest commands the mouth of the Penfeld and has served as a fortress for centuries. Within the castle, the National Maritime Museum connects the site to the city’s long naval role. Across the river, the Tour Tanguy contains dioramas depicting Brest before the Second World War.

The lift Pont de Recouvrance links the historic district of Recouvrance with the city centre. From its approaches, the harbour’s scale and steep banks are clear. Together, castle, tower and bridge explain how the Penfeld shaped Brest’s defences, shipbuilding and distinctive two-sided waterfront.
