Gothic St Nicholas Cathedral looks over medieval lanes and bridges above the Sarine.
Cathedral and medieval lanes
Start at St Nicholas Cathedral, whose Gothic tower and stained glass dominate the upper town. Nearby, the Bourg district gathers the town hall, old churches and steep lanes above the Sarine gorge. Walk downhill to see how the river’s sharp bend and cliffs shaped the medieval settlement.
Bridges, art and the river
Cross the Zähringen Bridge for a view back toward the cathedral and the lower town. Fribourg’s bridges span different periods and make the valley part of the visit, not just a backdrop. The Espace Jean Tinguely–Niki de Saint Phalle brings modern art into this historic setting, while the Museum of Art and History traces the region’s past.
