At the end of Piazza Ferretto, the Clock Tower is one of the few surviving pieces of medieval Castelnuovo.
The Clock Tower rises at the end of Piazza Ferretto and is one of the surviving towers of medieval Castelnuovo. The square’s arcaded buildings and Duomo di San Lorenzo make a compact historic core. The Torre dell’Orologio dates to the 12th-century fortifications; its public clock was added later.
South of the centre, Forte Marghera was built in the 19th century to defend Venice and its lagoon approaches. Its broad earthen ramparts and waterways now form a large heritage site. Together, the fort and old square show the contrast between Mestre’s inland urban history and Venice’s maritime defenses.
