The Romanesque portal of Salerno Cathedral leads to a crypt holding the relics of Saint Matthew.
Estimated journey times
The Cathedral of San Matteo, consecrated in 1084, is known for its Romanesque portal, courtyard and crypt holding the relics of Saint Matthew. Its bell tower rises above the lanes of the historic centre. A climb inland reaches Castello Arechi, a Lombard fortress later strengthened by Arechi II, with views across the Gulf of Salerno.
The medieval Giardino della Minerva is a terraced botanical garden in the old quarter. Its cultivation beds were associated with the Schola Medica Salernitana and medicinal plants; upper terraces look over the harbour and rooftops toward the surrounding hills.
