At Roman Carsulae, stretches of paved road and public buildings remain among open fields at the Apennine foothills.
Roman remains and city centre
Begin in central Terni at Piazza Tacito and the surrounding civic streets, then follow the archaeological story beyond the modern centre to Carsulae. This Roman settlement preserves stretches of paved road and public buildings, set in open countryside at the foot of the Apennines. Its remains help explain the region’s ancient route network and contrast with Terni’s modern industrial character.
Water and landscape
The Cascata delle Marmore, created by Roman engineering to redirect the Velino River, falls through a wooded gorge outside the city. Paths and viewpoints reveal the layered drops and water channels. The waterfall and Carsulae are separate excursions, so plan time for each; together they show the area’s mix of ancient infrastructure and dramatic river scenery.
