Ortigia’s layered centre

On the island of Ortigia, Piazza Duomo stands on the site of the Greek acropolis. The Cathedral of Syracuse incorporates columns from the ancient Temple of Athena into its structure, while nearby Castello Maniace guards the island’s seaward tip.

Greek and Roman Neapolis

The Neapolis Archaeological Park preserves a Greek theatre cut into Temenite Hill, a Roman amphitheatre and the Latomia del Paradiso quarries. Inside the quarry, the cave known as the Ear of Dionysius is a striking reminder that ancient stone extraction shaped this landscape.
