Walk the Venetian Walls around Città Alta for changing views across the plain.
Città Alta and the walls
The Città Alta is a hilltop medieval core enclosed by the UNESCO-listed Venetian Walls. Enter through Porta San Giacomo and continue to Piazza Vecchia, framed by the Palazzo della Ragione and Campanone tower. In nearby Piazza Duomo, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and Colleoni Chapel display contrasting layers of Lombard art.
Lower city and art
The funicular links upper and lower Bergamo; in the Città Bassa, the Accademia Carrara holds a major collection of Italian painting. Walk the walls for changing views across the plain, then descend to the modern centre and its 19th-century avenues, a clear counterpart to the medieval lanes above.
