Stadtplatz leads to the Ledererturm, with Renaissance and Baroque façades lining the walk.
Start at Stadtplatz, the long central square, and walk toward the Ledererturm at its western end. The gate is the sole survivor of four medieval towers that once stood in Wels; its gateway was recorded in 1326 and the tower took its present form after rebuilding in 1616–19. The square’s Renaissance and Baroque façades create a continuous streetscape, with Pollheim Castle nearby marking the former fortification corner.
Wels grew on the site of Roman Ovilava, and the Stadtmuseum Wels in the castle presents the town’s history alongside agricultural collections. The museum helps place the gate and square within a longer sequence of settlement and trade. Walk the side lanes off Stadtplatz to see how the old centre retains a compact form, then return to the Ledererturm for a clear view of the former western entrance.
