Step into Aachen Cathedral to see the octagonal core of Charlemagne’s palace chapel, built around 800.
The Aachen Cathedral grew from the palace chapel built for Charlemagne around 800. Its octagonal core and mosaics preserve the Carolingian heart of the complex; later Gothic additions created the soaring choir. The cathedral became the coronation church of more than thirty German kings and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Gothic Town Hall rises on the foundations of the Carolingian King’s Hall. Its Coronation Hall recalls imperial banquets, while the adjoining Katschhof frames the cathedral and civic façade in one historic square.
