Metz Cathedral rises in golden Jaumont limestone and is known for its extensive stained-glass windows, including work by Marc Chagall. Nearby, the Porte des Allemands is a fortified gate from the thirteenth century that bridges the Seille and survives as part of the medieval defences.
Across the railway district, the Centre Pompidou-Metz presents modern and contemporary art in a building with a distinctive roof inspired by woven forms. The contrast between the cathedral’s medieval fabric and this cultural centre reflects the city’s layered architecture.
