Inside the Church of the Holy Cross, Francesco Robba’s marble altar, carved in 1756, rewards a closer look.
Estimated journey times
The Church of the Holy Cross is the oldest preserved building and is recorded in documents by 1232. Its layered architecture reflects a long history, while the late-Baroque marble altar by Francesco Robba, carved in 1756, is a major interior work. The church once stood in a separate fortified enclosure outside the Lower Town walls, a reminder of the settlement’s divided medieval layout.
Križevci is known for a skyline of eight church towers and a cluster of religious and civic landmarks. The former synagogue now serves as the local tourist office and preserves a trace of the town’s Jewish community. Walking between the old church quarter and central streets gives a compact view of its historic role as a regional ecclesiastical centre.
