Ornate façades line the Stone City, rebuilt in stone after the fire of 1888.
Estimated journey times
The 1888 fire reshaped central Sundsvall, and the rebuilt Stone City is distinguished by ornate façades in stone and brick. Walk along Storgatan to compare historic commercial blocks, then look for the Hirschska House and the richly decorated City Hall. The architecture reflects a confident late-19th-century timber-trade centre.
Kulturmagasinet brings the Sundsvall Museum, library and archives together in converted harbour warehouses. Exhibitions explain the city’s growth and regional life around the Gulf of Bothnia. From the waterfront, the old stone centre rises behind the port, making the city’s industrial and civic histories visible in one walk.
