Walk Fredriksten’s ramparts for harbour views and a glimpse into the frontier’s military history.
Fredriksten Fortress began in 1661 as a border defence and grew through successive wars with Sweden. Its ramparts, bastions and museum trace the military history of the frontier; Charles XII of Sweden was killed during the siege of 1718.
The Halden Canal runs inland from Tistedal, linking lakes through locks and waterways. The historic DS Turisten and other canal craft recall how timber and goods once moved between the coast and the forested interior.
