At Stora Stöten, the vast copper pit opens up beside rows of red miners’ houses.
Estimated journey times
The Great Copper Mountain shaped Falun for centuries. Stora Stöten, the vast open pit, is the most dramatic remnant of copper production that began here at least in the thirteenth century and ended in 1993. The World Heritage landscape also includes shafts, industrial structures and water systems that powered mining and smelting.
The historic centre preserves seventeenth-century planning and wooden miners’ quarters, many painted with the distinctive Falu red pigment made from mine by-products. This is a cultural landscape, not just a single mine: settlements, slag heaps, waterways and rural estates together show how copper shaped work and daily life across Dalarna.
