Dupnitsa’s old clock tower marks a stroll through a craft town at the foot of the Rila Mountains.
Estimated journey times
The historic Clock Tower of Dupnitsa was adapted from an older defensive tower around 1790–1800. Nearby, Saint George the Victorious Church is the city’s largest church, while the older St George Church preserves medieval fabric and wall paintings. Together, these landmarks trace the town’s Ottoman-era and Bulgarian Revival layers.
Municipal history records Dupnitsa as a crossroads of mining, crafts and tobacco processing. The old centre grew around guild trades, workshops and churches; it remains a useful stop between Sofia and the Rila Mountains, whose monastery lies east of the town.
