The vivid early medieval wall paintings inside San Julián de los Prados bring Asturias’s first kingdom into view.
The UNESCO-listed San Julián de los Prados (Santullano) is one of the largest and oldest Asturian Pre-Romanesque churches; its interior preserves vivid early medieval wall paintings. On nearby Mount Naranco, Santa María del Naranco began as a royal building under Ramiro I before becoming a church, while San Miguel de Lillo stands close by. Together they show the distinctive architecture of the early Asturian kingdom.
In the centre, Oviedo Cathedral holds the Holy Chamber, part of the same UNESCO ensemble, and rises beside medieval lanes and the market area. Walk through Campo de San Francisco for a leafy pause and the sculpture of Mafalda, then return to the old quarter for cider houses and the region’s characteristic covered arcades.
