The Palmeral of Elche, a UNESCO-listed landscape of date palms and historic irrigation channels, spreads through the city centre. Follow its paths toward the Basilica of Santa María, whose Baroque façade and dome overlook the old quarter. Nearby museums explain how water management shaped this oasis in the dry Vinalopó valley.
Inside the basilica, the Misteri d’Elx retells the death and Assumption of the Virgin in a medieval musical drama, performed annually in August. Its two-part staging uses the church’s high dome and a special aerial apparatus, linking the performance to the town’s religious and civic history.
