Cervantes’ birthplace museum recreates a 16th-century home, tucked along the arcaded Calle Mayor.
The University of Alcalá, founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499, shaped the city’s humanist identity; its historic precinct centres on the College of San Ildefonso and its ornate façade. Nearby, the Cervantes Birthplace Museum recreates a 16th-century household in the writer’s family home. The arcaded Calle Mayor links these landmarks through the old quarter.
South of the historic centre, the archaeological site of Complutum preserves the forum, civic basilica, baths and streets of the Roman predecessor to modern Alcalá. The Casa de los Grifos is especially known for its preserved Roman wall paintings. Together, the university city and Roman remains show how successive cultural centres occupied the Henares corridor.
