The Newport Transporter Bridge, opened in 1906, is a landmark of Edwardian engineering; it is currently closed to visitors, so the suspended gondola is seen as part of the structure rather than a crossing. The Newport Medieval Ship, recovered during riverside construction, reveals the port’s medieval trade.
Nearby Caerleon preserves a Roman fortress site with an amphitheatre, baths and the National Roman Legion Museum. Tredegar House pairs a seventeenth-century mansion with a large historic park, showing the estates that shaped the surrounding region.
