Smeaton’s Tower stands above Plymouth Hoe, while the Mayflower Steps recall the ship’s 1620 departure.
Estimated journey times
Plymouth Hoe opens over Plymouth Sound, the natural harbour watched by the red-and-white Smeaton’s Tower, relocated here from the Eddystone Reef. The waterfront also holds the Royal Citadel, a seventeenth-century fortification still used by the military.
The narrow lanes of the Barbican retain historic quayside buildings. The Mayflower Steps are a later memorial marking the approximate point from which the ship departed in 1620; the nearby Mayflower Museum recounts the voyage and the town’s maritime past.
