St Michael’s Cathedral crowns Castle Hill with twin towers and a history stretching back a thousand years.
Walk up Vár Street to Veszprém’s Castle District, where St Michael’s Cathedral stands on Szentháromság Square. The bishopric dates to around the year 1000, and the cathedral’s history includes repeated rebuilding; its twin western towers define the hilltop skyline. Nearby, the Gizella Chapel and Holy Trinity Statue add smaller historic landmarks within the compact precinct.
The Fire Tower marks the entrance to the castle area and looks across the rooftops toward the lower city. Follow the ridge between churches, former episcopal buildings and narrow streets to appreciate how the fortified hill shaped Veszprém’s layout. The view from the ridge also reveals the deep valley and the Saint Stephen Viaduct, linking the historic core to newer districts.
