Mother of God Gate is the last surviving medieval portal, and old passages run beneath Masarykovo náměstí.
Estimated journey times
Begin on Masarykovo náměstí, a broad historic square framed by merchant façades and civic buildings. From here, the Gate of the Mother of God is the only surviving one of the five medieval portals that once enclosed Jihlava; its Renaissance upper storeys were added after a sixteenth-century fire. Nearby churches and the town walls trace the former mining centre’s medieval footprint.
A network of underground passages runs below much of the historic centre. These cellars and tunnels were created for practical urban use and now help explain how the compact town developed above them. Pair a walk through the old lanes with the Jihlava Underground route, then return to the square to read the city’s layers from street level.
