St Procopius’ Basilica overlooks the preserved Jewish Quarter, with synagogues and lanes reflecting shared heritage.
Jewish quarter and basilica
The Jewish Quarter preserves a dense medieval street plan, with synagogues, workshops and homes that document centuries of Jewish community life. The Rear Synagogue is among its key landmarks. Above the quarter, St Procopius’ Basilica began as part of a Benedictine monastery in the early 13th century.
Cemetery and river
The Old Jewish Cemetery, with thousands of gravestones, lies beyond the quarter’s hill. Together these places form a UNESCO-listed ensemble that speaks to Jewish and Christian coexistence. Follow the lanes down to the Jihlava River, which shaped the quarter’s narrow urban fabric.
