Brâncuși’s sculptural axis
The UNESCO-listed Monumental Ensemble of Brâncuși follows the Avenue of Heroes for about 1.3 kilometres. At one end, the Table of Silence and Gate of the Kiss shape a sequence of outdoor spaces; eastward, the Endless Column rises above the park. Walking the axis makes the relation between sculpture, street and landscape clear.
River and civic centre
The Jiu River runs beside parks and bridges through the city. Near the ensemble, central streets and public squares connect the memorial route with everyday life. Constantin Brâncuși designed the works in 1937–38 to commemorate those who died defending the city in the First World War.
