A walk through Danube Park leads to Baba Vida Fortress, whose towers still overlook the riverbank.
Estimated journey times
Baba Vida Fortress stands on the Danube bank over layers of Roman, Byzantine, medieval Bulgarian and Ottoman remains. Its moat, drawbridge and nine towers help explain why it guarded a strategic river crossing; the inner court also preserves traces of a medieval chapel.
Walk the riverside Danube Park to see sections of the old Kaleto fortifications and gates such as Stambol Kapia. The nearby Osman Pazvantoğlu Mosque, with its distinctive heart-shaped finial, and the Cross Barracks reflect the city’s Ottoman-period history and layered religious life.
