A visit to Medzhidi Tabia brings the Danube port into view, while a painted Roman tomb recalls Durostorum.
Estimated journey times
The city began as Durostorum, a Roman military centre established in 106 CE on the lower Danube. A late-antique tomb preserves richly painted scenes influenced by classical traditions, while archaeological collections trace the long life of the settlement. The site reveals the river’s role as both frontier and route.
The 19th-century Medzhidi Tabia fortress overlooks the river and holds an archaeological exposition. Below, the port and riverfront connect the layered history of Silistra with the broad Danube landscape and nearby Srebarna wetlands.
