Roman theatre and hilltop castle

The Roman Theatre Museum presents the remains of the 1st-century theatre beneath the old cathedral, with the museum route revealing how the ancient structure sits within the modern city. Above the harbour, Concepción Castle occupies a hill used by Roman, Islamic and medieval fortifications and gives a clear reading of Cartagena’s layered past.

Port and archaeology

At the waterfront, ARQUA, the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology, explores shipbuilding, trade and finds from Mediterranean waters. The 18th-century Muralla del Mar marks the historic edge of the centre. Together the theatre, castle and harbour museums show why this port has drawn successive Mediterranean cultures.
