Castle Keep and Black Gate stand above the Tyne on the site of a Roman fort.
Castle and old streets
The Castle Keep and Black Gate occupy a defensible ridge above the River Tyne, where a Roman fort once stood. Walk down Grey Street, a 19th-century route of curved stone façades, toward the river.
Bridges and quayside
The Tyne Bridge frames the waterfront, while the Quayside links river views with the older lanes uphill. Cross the nearby Swing Bridge to see how closely the historic centre and its crossings are tied together.
