Wander the old town’s market squares before finding the solitary minaret in the former manor park.
The preserved Old Town grew around market squares and churches, reflecting the town’s historic mix of communities and confessions. At the Evangelical Reformed Church, the Renaissance and Baroque tombs of the Radvila dukes connect the streets to the family that shaped the town’s 17th-century life.
A 28-metre minaret stands alone in the former manor park, built in 1880 as a memorial to wars with the Ottoman Empire. It is Lithuania’s only freestanding minaret. The green grounds and nearby town streets make an easy contrast between landscaped parkland and the compact historic centre.
