The belfry’s 49-bell carillon overlooks Grote Markt, while the St Alexius Beguinage keeps a quiet courtyard.
Estimated journey times
The Belfry rises from Dendermonde Town Hall on Grote Markt and belongs to the UNESCO-listed Belfries of Belgium and France. Its carillon, housed in the tower since the 16th century, now has 49 bells; the historic clock and civic buildings give the square a distinctly municipal character.
Founded in 1288, the St Alexius Beguinage is a square courtyard complex with a church and small houses. More than 200 beguines lived there at its late-17th-century height. Today the ensemble and its museum preserve a quieter view of urban life and women’s religious communities.
