The Grote Kerk began as the lords’ castle chapel in 1236 and became the parish church in 1299. Its Gothic choir dates to 1493, while the present cross-shaped nave and tower replaced earlier structures in 1738. Look for the church’s links to the Van Rechteren Limpurg family, whose burial vault lies beneath the choir.
Huis Almelo, built in its current form in 1662, remains the home of the countly family. Nearby Herengracht preserves a row of twelve characteristic houses once used by family members walking between the manor and church. Continue along Gravenallee, the tree-lined estate avenue, for a sense of Almelo’s historic landscape.
