Prinzipalmarkt and the Peace of Westphalia

The Prinzipalmarkt is lined with reconstructed gabled merchants’ houses and arcades that preserve the old city’s distinctive street form. At its centre stands the Gothic Historic Town Hall, where the Peace of Westphalia was confirmed in 1648; the Hall of Peace retains portraits of the envoys. These landmarks make Münster’s role in European diplomacy tangible.

Cathedral and lakeside

The St Paul’s Cathedral anchors the nearby Domplatz. Its nearly 500-year-old astronomical clock marks the hours with a moving display. Beyond the old centre, Aasee provides a broad waterside landscape with paths and open lawns. Market square, cathedral and lake offer three different views of the city’s civic, religious and recreational life.
