At Egge Museum, burial mounds and traces of Viking-age chieftains sit on a ridge with fjord views.
Estimated journey times
Much of Steinkjer was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in a planned postwar style. The civic centre and main streets therefore look markedly different from older Norwegian wooden towns. Along the waterfront, the town opens toward Beitstadfjord, while cultural institutions such as the Steinkjer Cultural Centre give the compact centre a contemporary focus.
Just north of the centre, Egge Museum sits among burial mounds and archaeological traces from many periods. The Egge farmstead was a seat of Viking-age chieftains; views from the ridge extend toward the fjord. Exhibitions connect these remains with old Steinkjer, regional farming and the area’s saga history, making Egge a useful counterpart to the rebuilt town below.
