Orestis Tower is the last remnant of the Byzantine fortress on Koulas Hill, above the modern streets.
Estimated journey times
On Koulas Hill, the Byzantine Acropolis of Serres preserves a 9th-century fortress built over an ancient stronghold; Orestis Tower is its surviving tower and a landmark above the modern streets. Below, the Bezesteni is a late-15th-century covered textile market, now home to the Archaeological Museum, whose finds span prehistory through Byzantine times.
The Zincirli Mosque, built in the 16th century, is one of the area’s notable Ottoman monuments. For a change of pace, the Valley of Agioi Anargyroi forms a green corridor near the centre. These nearby sites make it easy to read Serres through successive Byzantine, Ottoman and contemporary layers.
