The stone walls of Kaleto look out over the Danube, a reminder of the hill’s medieval defenses.
Estimated journey times
Above the Danube, Kaleto preserves stone walls from the medieval Bulgarian-Vizantine period, with traces of earlier occupation on the hill. The steep river-facing slope explains its defensive position, while surviving masonry outlines the fortress that guarded this stretch of the lower Danube.
A few kilometres east, the Roman military settlement of Novae adds an older layer to the region’s story. Nearby islands Persina and Vardim form part of a river environment known for wetlands and protected wildlife.
