Southend Pier stretches far into the Thames Estuary, with open views across the tidal waters.
Estimated journey times
Southend Pier stretches 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary; the present iron structure dates to 1889 and once carried the country’s first pier railway. Its length makes the water and tidal landscape central to the town’s seaside identity. The Pier Museum interprets the structure’s history, including its wartime survival.
At Prittlewell Priory, a Cluniac community was established in the early 12th century. The surviving refectory and prior’s chamber sit within later alterations, while medieval fishponds remain in Priory Park. Southchurch Hall, a moated early-14th-century manor, offers another view of the area’s medieval past.
