Rožňava’s Renaissance Watchtower still bears a cannonball lodged in its wall above the town square.
Estimated journey times
The historic square is dominated by a Renaissance Watchtower, built between 1643 and 1654 during the period of Ottoman incursions. A fire in 1766 led to changes in its upper section; a cannonball remains embedded in the south wall. The tower rises above the compact town centre and frames views toward the surrounding hills.
The Mining Museum occupies a purpose-built 1905 building and interprets the region’s mining and metallurgy. Its collections include medieval hand tools, pumping equipment, minerals and fossils from the Slovak Karst. The nearby Cathedral of the Assumption holds the 1513 Rožňava Metercia, a painting whose background depicts contemporary mining activity.
