Castletown House, William Conolly’s 18th-century Palladian mansion, stands beside the River Liffey.
Castletown House, built for William Conolly in the 18th century, is a major Palladian mansion on the banks of the Liffey. Its formal approach and broad parklands make the estate an architectural landscape as well as a house; riverside paths connect its lawns with the town’s edge.
In the centre, Tea Lane Graveyard occupies the site of an early Christian monastery associated with St Mochua. Its ruined medieval church and family graves preserve a much older layer than the mansion. Walking between Tea Lane, the Liffey bridge and Castletown gives a compact timeline from early ecclesiastical settlement to Georgian estate culture.
