The Museum of Making fills Derby Silk Mill with stories of craft and industry.
Mill and river
The Museum of Making occupies the former Derby Silk Mill, part of the early factory landscape on the River Derwent. Exhibits connect local making traditions with engineering and industry. Across Cathedral Green, Derby Cathedral rises above the city centre, joining the mill’s industrial story to a historic civic core.
Georgian streets
Nearby Friar Gate retains Georgian townhouses and former coaching inns, while Pickford’s House presents domestic life in an 18th-century merchant’s home. The short distances between mill, cathedral and residential streets make Derby’s layered history easy to read on foot.
