Cēsis Medieval Castle has about 800 years of history. Around five centuries ago, it was Livonia’s most powerful fortress. Its Western Tower preserves a 16th-century interior with a star vault and fragments of wall paintings.
The Old Town retains its medieval street plan around the castle and church. St John’s Church was built in the late 13th century. Cēsis was part of the Hanseatic League.
