From Rodrigues Lobo Square, arcades lead through the old centre beneath Leiria Castle.
The Castle of Leiria stands above the historic centre, its walls and towers overlooking the Lis valley. Below, Rodrigues Lobo Square is the city’s social heart, with Portuguese pavement, arcades and a view uphill to the fortress. The surrounding lanes hold traces of the medieval and early-modern town, including the Leiria Cathedral.
The square is named for 16th-century poet Francisco Rodrigues Lobo. A former 17th-century palace there, now the Leiria Athenaeum, once hosted the city assembly attended by novelist Eça de Queirós. This literary layer gives the central walk more than a castle view: it connects the city’s streets with Portuguese letters and local civic history.
